As it happens February tenth is my birthday. Clearly enjoying food is a big part of my life so I always give myself permission to eat and drink whatever I want on my birthday. So I ended up going out for lunch with my husband, shopping in the afternoon, then we spent the evening at home with a very expensive bottle of French wine and my favourite films.
As expected, the calorie count and amount of alcohol went way up. However, looking back on what I had, what strikes me is how similar this day was to how I remember eating as a child. Pancakes with maple syrup for breakfast are a very Canadian thing, as is the steak and mashed potatoes I had for dinner. And I remember having a baked camembert as a special treat when I was younger.
Comparing this day to how I’ve been eating the rest of the week, I’m struck by just how much my diet has changed over the years. It’s not simply following a gluten free diet either. I’ve definitely moved away from white carbohydrates like potatoes, rice and white flour to more whole grains like brown rice, sweet potatoes and quinoa. As well, while fruit and vegetables used to be more of an afterthought than the main event, I now make veggie tagines and bean stews. And I can’t remember the last time I made it through a whole day without having any fruit (sadly, I don’t think port and pomegranate sauce counts!).
I could never have imagined even 10 years ago that I would one day be a qualified sports nutritionist working with elite athletes. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that it’s never too late to make a change!
